Columns from Tabletalk Magazine, April 2018 — If you’re not reading Tabletalk, this is a good place to begin.

Is There Anything Wrong with Sports and Hobbies? — “As a Christian, how should you think well about sports and hobbies? Can Christians watch sports or enjoy hobbies? Should they? Those are the questions behind this brief Q&A.”

How C. S. Lewis Awakened John Piper to the ‘Realness’ of Life — “Someone introduced me to Lewis my freshman year with the book Mere Christianity.1 For the next five or six years I was almost never without a Lewis book near at hand. I think that without his influence I would not have lived my life with as much joy or usefulness as I have.”

How Do I Show Kindness to My Children and Expect Them to Obey? — “How do we teach our children to respect our God-given authority, while also treating them with Christlike humility and servant leadership?”

God’s Sovereignty and Our Responsibility — “God is sovereign in creation, providence, redemption, and judgment. That is a central assertion of Christian belief and especially in Reformed theology.”

Introducing ‘ESV Scripture Journals’ — This is a really good option for those who enjoy taking notes and charting progress in Bible reading.

Bach and His Bible — “Is Bach Lutheran?  The question is like, “Is the Pope Catholic?”  OK, there may now be some question about that, but not about Bach among his fellow Lutherans, who know him as their greatest artist.  And yet some critics have been saying that Bach ‘was a forward-looking, quasi-scientific thinker who had little or no genuine interest in traditional religion.’”
