DBG Spotlight (1-31-18)

Josh Buice

Just like that, January of 2018 is coming to a close.  On today’s DBG Spotlight, you can find some great articles and the final sermon by Dr. R.C. Sproul (1939—2017).  He preached his final sermon on November 26, 2017, at Saint Andrew’s Chapel in Sanford, Florida. The title of the sermon was “A Great Salvation” from Hebrews 2:1-4. He concluded that sermon with these words: “I pray with all my heart that God will awaken each one of us today to the sweetness, the loveliness, the glory of the gospel declared by Christ.”

Don’t Turn Off Your Brain — or Your Heart — “God gives us understanding when we think over what he says. He won’t give without our thinking and we can’t know without his giving.”

Learning to Kiss the Wave: Dave Furman’s Story — “What does it mean to ‘kiss the wave?’ These words, attributed to nineteenth-century British preacher Charles Spurgeon, speak to the Christian’s only hope for perseverance in suffering.”

Why I’m Accepting the Nomination for SBC President — J.D. Greear writes the following, “Many have asked if I am planning to run when Steve Gaines’ term is over this summer. And, after a lot of prayer, encouragement, and counsel, with the consent of our leadership team and my wife Veronica, I am again allowing my name to be placed in nomination for the election in Dallas.”

Four Reasons to Sing When Your Soul is Troubled — “When your heart is troubled, when you know not what to do, when you feel discouraged and are beginning to doubt, sing to the Lord, whether you want to or not.”

Youth-Driven Culture — “Youth culture today faces a great deal of anxiety. On nearly every level, an uncertain future waits on the horizon. But these anxieties are only the symptoms of the real problem, shadows of the anxiety humanity faces because of alienation. Our sin separates us from God. And we need someone to believe in. None of us, young or old, needs a therapeutic religion. We all need the gospel. And we all need a church of young and old—and in between—that proclaims and lives the gospel.”

John Piper Is a Very Bad Man: On Complementarity and Seminary Professors — “In recent days, Piper was once again labeled a bad man when he argued in a short Ask Pastor John piece that seminary professors should be men. Piper based this view on 1 Timothy 2:9-15; since men are called to be the preachers and teachers of Christ’s church, then elder-like men should train these future shepherds.”

Three Vivid Images of Unity in Diversity — “This was my theme for the recent G3 Conference and in my preparation I found myself transfixed by three vivid images that portray a biblical vision of unity in diversity.”
